Last week I was on a Turbonegro kick in The Brid, but this week I seem to have steered towards the Trail of Deads, and the Jonestowns. While I still keep buying every album TOD put out, their first three are just untouchable. Three perfect albums, even Pitchfork says so!! I still like TOD a lot, but they became bloated there for a while with too many members, and set their ambitions way too high. Heed this warning you Modest Mice.
Here is my favourite tune off of their first album, and probably top 3 TOD tunes ever. Its like they tried to rip off Sonic Youth, but ended up making a song thats better than ever Sonic Youth song put together.
I rotated out some albums from The Brid. These two new albums are gonzo, and I am not sure if they will be back in that 6 CD changer anytime soon. The new Modest Mouse was a HUGE let down. Maybe 3 songs that I really like, and the rest gave me a thumb skipping workout. The new Parquet Courts is pretty underwhelming too. I love their first album, and the second one was just ok. This one is gonna collect dust for the next couple of years.
Also, that Glass Boys album pictured below, that too was a big let down. Thankfully Built to Spill and Faith No More have put out fucking awesome albums this year.
The new Built to Spill album cannot be released soon enough. The two tunes that have been released, and which I have already purchased from the iTunes, are pretty kick ass. The artwork, thankfully, is the best cover art in years from these guys. They had some of the best cover art ever (Perfect From Now On and Keep It Like a Secret), to truly some of the most horrible cover art I have ever seen (You In Reverse and There is no Enemy).
These are great.
These are NOT great.
This is good. Kitties!
I hope this Spill album will be able to get me out of the funk of disappointment that is the new Modest Mouse album. While the new MM has a handful of good songs, maybe 4. I was happy that Johnny Marr is no longer in the band (stop ruining my bands Marr! ie Cribs), it turned out Eric Judy leaving was a bigger deal than I expected. Another issue I have with the Mice, is that they seem to be in that mid And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead phase of their career. I miss the three piece. No one needs 9 band members, and two drummers.
I knew this day would come, so much so that I tried my best to convince Gary not to spend over 200 bucks on a copy of Lonesome Crowded West. Modest Mouse is finally reissuing their first album THIS IS A LONG DRIVE FOR SOMEONE WITH NOTHING TO THINK ABOUT, as well as their classic, and currently super expensive THE LONESOME CROWDED WEST. I really love these albums a lot, so this is one reissue I will dig into. As a side note, I would like to thank the Mouses for not taking this opportunity to gouge their fans with super expensive reissues. A double 180g vinyl package for 22 bucks?! Thank you!
Each of these releases come with a bonus 7"! Just amazing.
Gary is going to see the Mighty Modest Mouse tomorrow in Pittsburgh, and posted this documentary on his bad ass blog. I just watched this this morning and loved it. I suggest you do the same.
