These past two weeks have been spent inside the Shady Lane home, both working and recreationally. I gotta say, this has been a lot easier than expected. Tunes, work, cat, food, not much has changed other than i finally have a couple coins in my savings account.
I finally scored a copy of SubURbia on VHS. One of my few Gen X white whales. This also happens to have one of the better soundtracks of the day, with Sonic Youth (who also did the score), and the classic X cover by Elastica and Stephen Malkmus.
I just came across this video by this band that I never heard of doing a cover of Gold Soundz by Pavement. The cameo list in this video is pretty impressive, topped off with a cameo by the man himself, S.M.
I did some research on this one and found this on their website.
The idea of doing an entire album of covers from 1994 appealed to Crane, 42, who recalled the albums that made a huge impact on him when they debuted. Album’s like Pavement’s Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, Superchunk’s Foolish, Dinosaur Jr.’s Without a Sound, Sebadoh’s Bakesale, and Guided by Voices’ Bee Thousand…these were the seminal albums that shaped his angsty, early 20′s. Recording 1994 was a way for Crane to re-experience much of this music through the ears of Walker, who is, coincidentally, exactly two decades younger than he.
Red Bubble is a pretty great site (once you look past the prices) where you can get some cool looking designs from random artists printed onto T-Shirts, among many other things. Below are a couple of the shirts that I really want, but at 30 bucks a shirt, I need to narrow it down to just one.
I broke my self exile from Discogs.com and bought this Jicks 7". The B-Side is their amazing cover of The Wipers classic "Alien Boy." I have owned this single on CD since I bought it at Encore when it first came out in 2001. A big reason I wanted this 7", outside of being a Malkmus/Pavement fanatic, is because this is one of my all time favourite album covers. I am thinking about framing it.
After seeing Malkjicks last week, this week has been nothing but Pavement and Jicks. I went through my Pavement singles and EP collection this morning to see what I am missing. I think I am going to start hitting Discogs.com every pay day and get one more Pave/Jicks single to add to the collection.
