Not many people know this, but the worlds greatest ever band is not some bunch of drug-addled relics from the 1960s, but Dayton Ohio’s Guided By Voices, who blazed a trail of glory over two decades or so before calling it a day in 2004. If you are one of the people who do know this, then you will need no further encouragement to attend Dublin’s first ever Guided By Voices celebration night, at the Workmans Club on Thursday May 5^th. If you are not, then this is your chance to find out why GBV are the favourite band of such disparate personalities as Graham Linehan, Steven Soderbergh, and recently installed White House press secretary, Jay Carney.

The night will feature a rare appearance by Ireland’s leading Guided By Voices tribute act, Voided By Ponces, whose repertoire of GBV classics has been steadily increasing in quantity since their formation two years back. Normally content to restrict themselves to boozy rehearsals in a Smithfield fruit and veg market, with the occasional private party thrown in, VBP have been enticed out on to the Workmans stage for Hugh McCabe’sTraces Of The Real photography exhibtition, which opens at the Workmans Club on the same night. Before the Ponces take to the stage however, an array of fellow members of the GBV cult will be giving their own interpretations of GBV numbers. These include Squarehead, Yeh Deadlies, The Riot Tapes, Powered By Springsand The Former Soviet Republic.
