With Pavement’s year-long reunion tour now complete, the members of the acclaimed indie outfit are moving on to different ventures. Multi-instrumentalist Bob Nastanovich is now a horse racing reporter, and the band’s frontman, Stephen Malkmus, is readying a new album with his other band, The Jicks. Said effort, titled Mirror Traffic, will hit stores August 23rd via Matador Records.
As previously reported, Malkmus’ fifth post-Pavement LP, and first since 2008′s Real Emotional Trash, was produced by the one and only Beck Hansen. According to Matablog, the end result “makes a compelling case that after some 22 years in the public eye, Malkmus’ full range of musical and lyrical capabilities had yet to be previously explored.”
“The casual virtuosity (and staggering guitar invention) won’t necessarily come as a shock, nor will the rapier wit of one of contemporary rock’s brightest minds. But without dissing prior works that we deeply love, we can promise that ‘Mirror Traffic’ is the album that ties together Stephen’s skill-set like none of it’s predecessors.”
Tour dates and an mp3 preview are said to be coming shortly. Matablog also adds that this will be the final Jicks album to feature the drumming of Janet Weiss. Jakes Morris, best known as the drummer for The Joggers, will assume the same position in the Jicks for upcoming shows.
